I’m going to tell you a secret.
I haven’t written about this before, because it was mine.
It wasn’t done for show and tell.
It was a private act to satiate a moment in need.
But as I sit before this screen, wanting to convey to you just how ridiculously life transforming it is to give, I realized it was time to share this story with you.
It was 12/12, and all the new agers were freaking about saying that this was the dawn of a new paradigm. As I looked around, I noticed a lot of like-minded people who looked a lot alike joining together to talk about how different the times were.
I got a little high and mighty on my horse. How is this so different when we aren’t reaching out of our safe and secure circles? I mocked.
Luna called me out.
And she challenged me to actually do something different.
The result was a trip the thrift store. We purchased as many beautiful scarves as we could find. Luna took them home and washed them. And then, on a cold rainy day in Oakland, Luna and I walked down the streets with scarves in our hands, stopping every single person who walked by, offering them a scarf.
The conversations went like this:
“They’re a gift”
[Look of shock and surprise.]
“Really? People don’t do that around here.”
“They do now.”
I’m not sure how it happened, but it became more than just handing over the scarf. In one spontaneous moment, after a woman accepted a scarf, and after she chose which one she wanted, I asked her if I could wrap the scarf around her. And she said yes.
We wrapped scarves around a homeless woman.
Two young teenage boys.
An old businessman said there was more people in need then him, and missed out on the sweetness.
Two young bikers who were cold and wet
The people I met on the street gave us so much pleasure that day.
Just by receiving what we had to give.
We didn’t take pictures. But the experience is still vivid.
May we all have friends such as Luna who call us out to take simple actions on creating the world we most want to live in. I wanted the paradigm shift everyone was talking about to involve a unification of people of all walks of life. Luna helped me walk my talk that day.
